Soundwaves from Nyanga: How a WhatsApp Bot and Lightweight Web App are Set to Revolutionize Zimbabwe’s Grassroots Music Industry

Born out of a community radio studio in Nyanga, PlayIt and its WhatsApp engine PeaChat are breaking down digital barriers for rural Zimbabwean musicians—positioning a brand-new platform to transform how grassroots talent builds audiences, sells tickets, and monetizes music without data obstacles.

Soundwaves from Nyanga: How a WhatsApp Bot and Lightweight Web App are Set to Revolutionize Zimbabwe’s Grassroots Music Industry

The static inside the studio speaker hissed softly, fading out as the red "ON AIR" light flickered off inside the Nyangani FM broadcast room.

Asward Mudondo took off his headphones and leaned back against his chair. Over three years at Nyangani Community Radio Trust—serving as Technical Officer, Programs Manager, Marketing Manager, and eventually Acting Station Manager—he had sat through hundreds of interviews with local talent. Every week, passionate upcoming artists from across rural Nyanga and beyond would pour their hearts into the microphone, performing soul-stirring melodies that vibrated through the radio tower.

And every single week, the interview ended with the exact same question from eager listeners: "Your music is incredible! How can we get your song?"

The artists would enthusiastically list their digital presence: "Follow me on Facebook! Subscribe to my YouTube channel! Check out my TikTok!"

But as Asward watched them leave the studio, a frustrating reality weighed heavily on him. He knew the stark truth of the community outside those studio doors: nearly 70% of local fans had no access to open-internet data. They could not afford expensive internet bundles just to watch YouTube videos or scroll through social feeds. Their primary connection to the digital world ran almost entirely on small, affordable WhatsApp-only bundles.

The music stopped where the radio signal faded. Musicians remained uncompensated and unheard outside their immediate circles, while their most dedicated fans were left in the dark, unable to stream or own the tracks they loved.

Dual Access: Low-Data WhatsApp Meets Lightweight Web Browsing

Determined to bridge this divide, Asward founded PlayIt under Peacro Technologies Africa (Pvt) Ltd, a company he founded. Just a few days after its launch and currently onboarding its pioneering first wave of artists, the platform is structured to systematically tackle the structural barriers facing Zimbabwe's emerging musicians through a dual-access model:

* The PeaChat WhatsApp Gateway +263 718 238 300: Instant Code Search. Every artist and song receives a dedicated shortcode (e.g., PLAY2860). A fan simply texts the code to PeaChat on WhatsApp to instantly play, rate, or support the track without needing open-internet data.

* The Lightweight Web Portal playit.co.zw: For fans and listeners with data access, the web platform delivers a sleek, fast, and light-bandwidth digital experience. It allows users to seamlessly browse catalogs, discover upcoming talent, stream music, and explore community event listings without draining heavy data allowances.

Built to Scale: Key Features for Emerging Artists

* Stepping Stone & Smart Discovery Engine: Bridging the gap between grassroots talent and national icons, PlayIt is already hosting established hitmakers like Trymore Bande and Dino Mudondo, who serve as direct stepping stones for rising talent. When fans search for household names, the platform’s genre-matching algorithm automatically introduces upcoming local talent under sections like "More from this Genre" (e.g., Gospel or Afro-Pop). Likewise, whenever a popular song is played, automated recommendations—such as "You May Also Like..."—highlight raw, grassroots tracks, giving underground local artists organic visibility next to industry icons.

* Producer Profiles & Direct Studio Bookings: Music production is the backbone of every great track, and PlayIt gives producers the spotlight they deserve. Artists can directly credit their producers on songs, linking straight to dedicated producer profiles that showcase their portfolio, past projects, and hit songs. Beyond recognition, these profiles empower producers to build their businesses directly through the platform, allowing artists and clients to easily hire them or book studio sessions.

* Direct Event Ticketing: Artists can create live event listings, market them with custom QR codes on their promotional flyers, and sell tickets directly to fans inside WhatsApp or online.

* Viral Sharing & QR Code Integration: Every flyer comes equipped with QR codes for effortless scanning, paired with built-in social and WhatsApp sharing capabilities to help new songs spread quickly.

* Micro-Payments via ZB’s Smile & Pay: Songs can be listed for free or sold for as little as $0.10. The built-in payment engine seamlessly integrates with local payment channels—including EcoCash, OneMoney, O'Mari, and InnBucks—all powered by ZB Bank's Smile & Pay gateway.

Voices from the First Wave: Early Adopters Lead the Way

Though the platform is only days old and beginning its journey with a handful of trailblazing artists, the immediate response from early users highlights its potential for rural communities.

Tinashe Kombo (aka Sky Rider)

Zimdancehall Artist | Mabvuramiti / Chaperuka Village, Nyanga North

"For a long time, artists from rural villages like ours felt invisible. We write songs about our real lives, but without a budget for internet promotion, our voices stay in the village. PlayIt has given us a stage that every Zimbabwean carries in their pocket. For an upcoming artist, this is the light that brings us out of the dark."

Isaac Kadzima (aka Tripple G)

Gospel Artist | Village Ward 19, Nyanga South

"I started recording on December 22, 2020. I have recorded 18 songs so far, with 142 songs still waiting to be recorded—most of them come to me in dreams, others from real-life social experiences.

My main challenge has always been getting those songs to fans, especially in rural areas where over 70% of our listeners live. With PlayIt, I just share my artist code or song code on WhatsApp. On my very first day, I got 420 plays. Comparing that to the 200 views I gathered on YouTube over three whole years... this innovation is something else entirely."

Mbuya Mukunza (76)

Community Elder | Ruchera Village, Nyanga

"Before this, the only way to get a new song was to hear it on the radio or travel 40 kilometers to Nyanga town just to pay someone to load songs onto a memory card.
But with PlayIt on our WhatsApp, we get the song instantly right in our village. It is so simple that I don't even need my grandson to help me operate it—all I need to know is the song code. When we hear a local artist on the radio now, we just listen for the song code, text it on WhatsApp, and enjoy the music."

Mr. Zano Bore

District Arts, Culture, and Heritage Officer | Nyanga District (Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture)

"PlayIt is addressing a structural bottleneck that has hindered our district's cultural economy for decades. By leveraging ubiquitous platforms like WhatsApp and a lightweight web architecture to solve access, monetization, and event ticketing, Peacro Technologies is empowering our creative youth and preserving grassroots heritage. This initiative demonstrates how local innovation can directly lift up marginalized artistic communities."

The Road Ahead: Bringing Grassroots Music to Light

As PlayIt begins onboarding more musicians across Nyanga and surrounding districts, its trajectory offers a blueprint for grassroots media distribution. By combining the conversational ease of WhatsApp with the power of a lightweight web interface, PlayIt isn't asking communities to adapt to complex new systems—it is meeting artists and listeners exactly where they already are.
